Here’s the deal: music is there to be listened to and enjoyed. I don’t mean it should make you happy, but it should be enjoyed, whether it’s because it resonates with some facet of your personality or just because you like bass solos or whatever. Regardless, if you’re not enjoying a piece of music, you are missing out. “Standards” when being a music a conneisseur are simply a way of rationalizing cultural asceticism. Life’s short so therefore you should seek out as much music as possible, therefore maximizing the amount of enjoyment you will experience before you die. Listen to everything and avoid nothing. Not even Charles Manson’s album or NSBM (aka metal for Neo-Nazis). I pirate almost all my music anyway so no worries about supporting regimes of hate with my soft-earned dollars.
The Pirate Slut operates pretty simply (rules subject to change and increased complexity):
1) As often as possible, I listen to an album from my vast unlistened-to music collection, of about 30000 songs (at the time of this writing…it expands daily because dammit there might be more good music out there.)
2) I write why this album is worth listening to and to whom it might be really worth checking out.
3) If you recommend an album or otherwise collection of music to me, I will listen to it immediately and review it the following day. Anyone and anything is open for my reactions and that’s why they call me The Pirate Slut.
4) The best song(s) on each album will get sent to those who want a taste, if you ask nice.
5) When I’m not doing steps 1-4 I’ll still be writing stuff and giving out music.
I grow tired of reading music reviewers that boil music down to a few contrived comparisons to other bands you may not have heard of and then give you one number out of a larger number to express their overall opinion. I want to help others increase their Enjoyment Quotient (EQ) through clear speech and a lack of pretense as I talk about music, rather then simply direct my critical gaze mostly at my own navel.
